Stephen Cowley investigates the radical heterogeneity of language. Rather
than focus on verbal patterns, he stresses how babies use multimodal
dynamics to become persons. This links interests in distributed cognition
with empirical work on learning to talk, the emergence of self, and the
micro timing of human-robot interaction. In pursuing this agenda he founded
and co-ordinates the Distributed Language Group:
