Laura Perini

My research is focused on the philosophical issues involved in scientists' use of visual representations. I received a B.S. and a Master’s degree in Biology from UCLA, and spent several years doing basic research in biochemistry. As a biologist I was curious about the prominent role of visual representations in biological research and teaching. As a graduate student in philosophy, I was puzzled by the fact that philosophers paid so little attention to figures. I decided to focus my research on scientific visual representations—an ideal convergence of my interests in philosophy of science and in aesthetics. I received my PhD from the University of California, San Diego in 2002, and am now an Assistant Professor at Virginia Tech.
