Gene Hammel is an anthropologist. His main areas of interest include kinship structure, stratification, ranking and mobility, European peasant society (particularly in the Balkans), anthropological linguistics, historical and anthropological demography. He has recently contributed to the volume Discouraging Terrorism: Some Implications of 9/11 (National Academic Press, 2002).
